Quintessential breakfast
DESCRIPTION: We ate here for breakfast while visiting relatives in Oregon. The place is bright and clean with a wait staff that is *moving*. My wife orderd the French toast, I ordered my usual - 2 eggs over easy, bacon, hashbrowns, wheat toast, and coffee. <P> Our server apologized a couple minutes after seating us for not getting coffee & water to us. We were still looking at the decor when she said that and didn't think she was slow at all. Coffee in Oregon is about like that in Washington/Seattle - almost a religion. <P> My wife's french toast was a single slice of batter dipped crispness that covered the plate. The menu lists 1 or 2 slices for an order. I would be impressed if anyone could eat 2 of them. She said it was about the best french toast she had ever had. A generous serving of butter was placed on the table for her and my plates. <P> My eggs were a little undercooked but that's the risk for eggs over easy. The hashbrowns were cooked just right - not too rispy and not soggy. With ketchup on top I was happy. The best part was the bacon. This is stuff pigs dream of becoming. Nicely thick long slices, cooked with a little crispiness, and flavor in every bite. Wonderful. <P> The whole time our coffee cups were kept topped up without having to ask. My brother-in-law said that lunch and dinner is just as good. I'll take his word for it. <P> I highly recommend Cafe Today to anyone.

One of Salem's Best Restaurants
DESCRIPTION: Ideal for special occasions and frequent visits. The menu is varied including beef, lamb, pork, fish, and chicken. The atmosphere is unique and well done. Enter through the main entrance, out the back of the building, down a flight of stairs through an outdoor garden and patio, then back into the restaurant located in the old West Salem shopping district. Check it out. You'll enjoy every aspect of this dining experience.

Best of the worst
DESCRIPTION: Although Salem is the state capitol it is a virtual ghost town when it comes to decent dining. Perhaps the close proximity of Portland is the reason. In most large cities Morton's would be rated as "OK". Sadly in Salem it must be rated at "outstanding".
