"Ham & Grits Crustless Quiche" from Village Pub, Big Sur, CA
1/2 c Water 1/4 ts Salt 1/3 c Quick cooking grits; uncooked 12 oz Canned evaporated milk 1 1/2 c Chopped ham 1 c Cheddar cheese; (4 oz) shredded 3 lg Eggs; lightly beaten 1 tb Chopped fresh parsley 1 ts Dry mustard 1 ts Hot sauce; (1 to 2) Recipe by: Inn recipes Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bring water & salt to boil in saucepan; stir in grits. Remove from heat; cover & let stand 5 min. (mixture will be thick). Stir in milk & next 6 ingred. Pour into sprayed 9 1/2" quiche dish or a 9 1/2 inch deep dish pie plate. Bake for 30 35 min. Let stand 10 min. before serving. Cut into wedges. Yield 6 servings. Variation: Use Italian Sausage in place of ham (saut, drain & crumble well), and eliminate mustard & hot sauce. This recipe is shared with us by the innkeepers at Country Oaks Bed & Breakfast. Gorgeous Views/Wonderful Food
DESCRIPTION: We had lunch here outside on the patio overlooking the ocean. Sweeping views, excellent service and smooth as silk acorn squash soup. I highly recommend Cielo at the Ventana Inn & Spa to anyone visiting the Big Sur area.

Breathtaking Views
DESCRIPTION: Just south of Big Sur on Highway 1 is Nepenthe. This restaurant has amazing views of the Ocean and coast. There is a large number of outdoor seating, all with views. I just stopped for a quick bike on my way up HW 1, so I only sample had some soup and a sandwich. The soup (lentle) was excellent as well as vegetarian. The "burger" was amazing, a very soft French bread, a delicate beef patty, cheese, and their ambrosia sauce. One of the best burgers ever. Service was excellent.

Overrated
DESCRIPTION: Nepenthe trades on its unique and fantastic location - high on a bluff overlooking the surf at Big Sur. But while the prices reflect the quality of the view, the quality of the food doesn't match either. Average food at double the prices for comparable quality elsewhere.

The Place to Dine in Big Sur.
DESCRIPTION: I live in Indiana, but I travel the west every summer by motorcycle and the ride down Highway 1 through Big Sur is always part of my agenda. I absolutely cannot ride past Nepenthe without stopping - for brunch at the Cafe Kevah or lunch or dinner up in the main restaurant. I can't say enough about the ambiance - it's a magical place perched between coastal mountain peaks and the Pacific Ocean. I concede that the food is a bit pricey, but it's good and never disappoints. This is my favorite restaurant in the entire world!
