Good food, great service, reasonable prices
DESCRIPTION: If you are stopping through Arcata, on the northcoast, I would recommend getting some sushi from Tomo while you are there. You will not regret it.

Good sushi, overpriced, good service
DESCRIPTION: Aside from the fact that the food is overpriced and they often put ingredients in the sushi that is not listed in the menu (green onions, etc), this is a fun place to eat, especially on a date or with friends. The sushi is tasty and there is veggie food, also main courses and combination meals. Be prepared to wait an hour for takeout, or to be told that they are not doing takeout that evening; happens all the time and keeps me from being as regular of a customer as I would like.

DESCRIPTION: Arcata Pizza and Deli - referred to by locals simply as APD....so yummy. Large portions, especially the sandwiches....oh my I'm hungry just thinking about it. Three people can share an order of fries, service is great. Can be difficult to get a seat, so if with others, have one guard an area while others order.

Great for vegetarians (carnivores like it too)
DESCRIPTION: Big portions & decent prices. Great place to run into people. Good beer. Prompt, friendly staff. Clean bathrooms. It can get extremely crowded - it's one of the few places open late at night - but it's usually pretty quiet during the day.

Quantity or Quality?
DESCRIPTION: Well, APD is one of those Arcata standbys that every poor food deprived sap in the North Coast has frequented at one time or another. Their hours are perhaps the best part of the experience, as the rest of the town closes at 8:00, while APD is open well past midnight on most nights. But then...oh. Then you have the food. Food is hit or miss at APD, and when you hit, it's really more of a solid tap - nothing spectacular, but it'll fill you up. The misses, on the other hand, are off by a mile. Don't ever order their sausage pizza or you'll be greeted by a large grease laden excuse for a pizza with pounds of sliced Kielbasa dropped on top post-baking. The main thing that APD's food has in its favor is the sheer mass of it. Their calzone, essentially a gigantic cheese pie, is enough to feed, if not an army, a small guerilla force bent on taking over this little hippy town. Their pizza is flat, limp, and soaked in grease; your paper plate will be inevitably stained yellow. That said, if you've spent the day doing something physically exerting, APD can be just the ticket. A whopping quantity of food can be obtained for a price that, while far from cheap, is palatable under the right circumstances.

The Best Place to Eat.
DESCRIPTION: APD is an amazing place. Basically, no matter what you order there, you're going to get a whole lot of food, and it's going to be very good. Truly deserving of 5 stars. Indeed, this restaurant is the best of its kind that I have eaten at, and the food is the best of its kind that I have tasted.

DESCRIPTION: The main reason APD is popular is that it is open so late. The pizza and food is pretty darn good, but not the best. I have eaten there four times now, and each time I have called in a takeout order and they tell me when to come in. Well, when I am told to come in ten minutes and I do so, only to wait over a half hour more for my food with no apology, it gets old fast. The food is never ready when they say, so go do your grocery shopping and pick up your food that will be ready in "five minutes" in a half hour. If you know to do that, then the place is really very good. The chef salad is excellent, full of meat (I buy a head of extra lettuce to add, you wouldn't believe how much extra lettuce you want to add to this!), and the all meat pizza is way too salty and greasy and I would never order it again despite loving meaty pizzas. There is a good selectiopn of sandwiches, have one on a brio roll.

Smug's can smuggly say they're the best!
DESCRIPTION: I first discovered Smug's Pizza in Arcata, California when I attended Humboldt State University. I have to say that it is the ultimate best in pizza I have ever had. I have lived all over the US, from Wisconsin to California to New York and everywhere in between and even now, years after my last piece of Smug's pizza, I can still say that it is the absolute best. But oddly enough, only in Arcata. There is another Smug's in Eureka, the neighboring town, but it is in no comparison to the pizza found in Arcata. Barely bigger then a closet in the wall, it is by far one of the best pizza places anywhere. The ingredients are fresh and whether you have your pizza with red sauce or with pesto, it's simply divine. My last trip to California, I drove five hours out of my way just to get back to Arcata for that lovely pizza. Cheap, at only about 1.50 a slice, fresh, and creative in their selection, I only wish it was closer to home. THis is definitely pizza on the go though as there is no seating, though many opt to sit on the sidewalk to enjoy their pizza. It is very much a college student's grab and go. Nothing fancy about decor or service, just great pizza.

Worst Pizza Ever
DESCRIPTION: I can't believe that someone would have the audacity to claim that Smug's is the best pizza they ever tasted. The pizza tastes like cardboard and is bland as hell. The ambiance was rated 3 stars by the first reviewer, the place is a standing room only hellhole. Awful pizza...eat a Live From New York on 9th st instead...that is tha bomb!

DESCRIPTION: Have tried APD, Round Table, Papa Murphys and Papa John's, and Live From New York, and Blue Max is the best. Great sauce, great crust, toppings are just what I expected and wanted. Good amounts of everything. Papa Murphy's is pretty good as well comsidering the price but if you don't want to bake it yourself than this is the place to call.

Hey Juan Burritos --- Delicious Food for a Great Price
DESCRIPTION: This was my first time back to Hey Juan Burritos in 10 years. Three years ago, the business was taken over and the menu under-went a few healthy changes. Everything is prepared fresh (in house) and absolutely NO lard is used in the cooking. The food tastes absolutely delicious and it is a great bargain for the college students. One of their Super Burritos is like getting two meals for the price of one.
